From the interview with Gonca Vuslateri

What was your student life like?

There were four of us who rented a house. One day, Mujdat Hoca asked, “Who do you live with in the house?” I said, “A Kurd, a Greek, a Cypriot and a Turk live together.” He said, “If these 4 people live together, there will be no problem in this country.” Whoever was in a bad situation, we would take him/her to our home. If he/she didn’t have money, he/she wouldn’t be included in the rent until he/she earns. We were making small sums of money. I’ve played small roles, I’ve acted in roles, I’ve acted in jobs that people make fun of. I loved Haydarpasa Gar tavern. If I played in a bad project, I would sit on the stairs of Haydarpasa Gar tavern, and if I played in a good project, I would go to Baghdad Street to spend my money.

How did you start your TV series projects?

While I was at DOT, I got an offer. Someone liked my acting, someone suggested it, someone referred about it. For the first time, I had a small role in Aliye tv series. I was supposed to play in 3-4 scenes. One day, Ayfer Tunc called and said, “It’s a very small role, but I want to write something small for you every episode. If you have any thoughts of anything, tell me.” Nejat Isler would enter the stage and I would clean up next to him. I wanted to come up some times not to show my acting but to earn more money. I was getting 400 Turkish Liras a week. It was a big amount for me at that time. I was sharing my house with 4 other people, and each of us was paying 70 Turkish Liras each month.

How did life change after Vasfiye?

When I became known for my role as Vasfiye in the Turkish series Fake World (Yalan Dunya), I wondered what kind of roles I would play. Because it sticks to the role that someone is most successful in, like Erol Taş [she is referring to a Turkish actor]. I said how is it going to be? Who is going to say let’s give her a mother role, and she would make the audience cry? Then Fatih Aksoy’s involvement was a milestone for me. He told me his tv project named Mom (Anne) where the mother is going to throw her child away. I started to think whether the audience would lynch me if it was very popular and I wondered if they should give me security. The tv series started and it became very popular on Twitter. People were saying, “We forgot about Vasfiye, bravo, what kind of acting is this!” I think that was the real breaking point.

You also sing. You released a song by Sezen Aksu. You have a duet with Tuna Kiremitci. They already want you to imitate Sezen Aksu in every show you attend.

After the divorce, I lived in Sezen Aksu’s house for a period of 1-2 months. It was an inexplicable, unimaginably beautiful period. It wasn’t a very sad time for me. I always spent time with her in the studio. She read my pieces first. We talked about it. Especially, I had an Ataturk paper, we worked on it all night. It was a pleasure to rummage through her library. One day I wrote a song, it appealed to me a lot. The song stayed with me for 2 years. Then we made the song with Dogan Duru (Redd). Bala Atabek, who is a friend of mine from both secondary school and conservatory, shot the music video. Aykut Gurel was also involved in the project from the very beginning. We did it, we sent it to Ms. Sezen, but it hasn’t come back for now. But I’m going to do something in the future, of course.

Your marriage has been over a year old. What things were changed after being being married?

We have achieved something beautiful. We don’t interfere in each other’s business. We both have a system. We both have separate sleepless times. My husband Burak (Ertogan) works at ‘Kosem’ and ‘Vatanim Sensin’. In the evenings we talk about work and series.

What was it about your partner that impressed you?

If I’m sick or anything has happened to me, he’s in charge. There is eight-year gap between us and he is much more experienced in living that life. What matters to us is respect. No matter what happens in the future, when something happens in our lives, the other will end next to it.

When did you say, 'Acting will be my profession'?

I didn’t say it, my mother said. When I was in elementary school, I came home and said, “The teacher asked everybody, ‘What are you going to be?’ and I said, ‘What am I going to be?’ And my mom said, “Be a theater actor.” A week or two later, we went to a talk by Ediz Hun [she is referring to a Turkish actor]. I admired him so much that I started crying when I saw his hair turn white. I asked, “Is he going to die?” My mother said, “If you become a theater actor, you will never die.” And that’s how I decided to become a theater actor.

Have you been broke anytime?

I traveled and worked all over Turkey, I even did balloon inflation work in the promotion of durable goods. For example, in the summer times, I used to sell soft drinks in Bodrum by hanging a tray around my neck. One day, Selcuk Yontem [she is referring to a Turkish actor] saw me. I wasn’t acting in TV shows yet. I think he understood my energy, and he asked, “Are you an actor?” My back was so slumped that he took all the soft drinks. He has been like my father ever since that day. I also have a memory with Mujdat Hoca. When I was 17 or 18 years old, I was sleeping at school. One day, when I thought that I could not fight this poverty, Mujdat Hoca banged on the table saying, “I do not give you this right.” I did my job by thinking only about art without thinking about hunger again.
