From the interview with Baran Bolukbasi
Why did you choose acting over music?
I haven’t made a choice yet. I would like to clarify something here. Since my childhood, I have always done something with love. Music and acting are professions that are true love for me. Therefore, there cannot be no choice.
When did you realize that acting was the right profession for you? What's the most exciting thing about acting?
I’m still at the very beginning of everything. I can’t say I understand anything. Once I understand something about acting, it means that I hav finished my purpose on that. Why would I want that?
Which one is harder, comedy or drama?
Every job is difficult if you want to do it well.
If you had to continue your life as a character you’ve acted, which character would it be?
None.
Do you believe that you have a role in society as an actor?
I believe that I have a role as an individual, not as an actor. I think actors need to pay more attention to this because their work is seen by many people.
Do you have a milestone in your career projects?
My milestone is my first job.
What do you think about tv series in online platforms? Would you like to take part in these projects?
I support the sector’s various platforms. I can take part in these projects if something is appropriate for me.
Apart from acting and music, is there any area you want to improve yourself?
Become a sportsman. Maybe I can take aerobatic flight training and do hobby flights.
What do you do in your free time?
I am actively working on my studio and doing music. I cycle. I hang out with my friends.
Do you have boundaries? Is there anything that you can’t stand for?
We all know that boundaries are crossed by others. Of course, there are something that I can’t stand for.
You have lots of fans. How does it feel to be loved by lots of people? Do you prefer loving or being loved?
It is good to be loved. But, sometimes having too much love may create difficult situations. Loving someone makes you happier.
Your character Tarik in the TV series Golden Boy (Yali Capkini) gathered lots of anger in the audience? How did you decide to take that role?
I can recommend that you watch Tarik carefully. Tarik is a person who cannot fully love, is very sensitive, and is used to the living standards of his family, and has created his own space in his family.
You studied acting at the university and took some acting training afterwards. Have you always wanted to be an actor?
I was always curious about acting. But, I wanted to become a pilot. I become very emotional whenever I see a plane. I had three goals: becoming a pilot, music, and acting. Now, I have two of them. In the future, I am planning to get private pilot license.
You were born in Iskenderun and lived in Antalya and Adana before moving to Istanbul. Usually, you develop more imagination if you go further away from the metropolis. Is it the same for you?
I was very rebellious at first. Now, I am happy to be born in Iskenderun and live in Adana, Antalya, and Istanbul. I have long-lasting friends from four different cities. Iskenderun is a small city and art is very popular there. As far as I know, it is the city where the most books are read. In that small city, there were three studios and a music course. There were many people who were interested in music and theatre. This all helped me to grow.
What are your short term goals?
I want to learn the background of my work. I particularly want to improve my knowledge about theatre and cinema. I am a little bit weak in that area. For example, my roommate knows the director of each film even though he hasn’t watched the movie. I didn’t use to read a lot in the past. Now, I’ve started reading books. As a team, we buy books for each other. For instance, I currently read Stefan Zweig’s Chess. Hakan Abi bought that book for me. I try to improve myself like this.
Which movie excited you most recently?
Inglourious Basterds.
Which movie did you watch several times?
Gladiator.
Which tv series do you follow?
Black Mirror. I generally don’t watch tv series. But, each episode of Black Mirror is like a cinema film and that’s why, I follow it.
Which song/singer have you been listening to recently?
Recently, I am listening to Spanish street singers. Additionally, I have been listening to Michael Jackson songs after watching Michael Jackson’s This Is It documentary.
Which book do you recommend everyone?
Emrah Serbes’ Müptezeller. Additionally, Nejat İşler’s Gerçek Hesap Bu.
What did you do with the money you earned professionally the first time?
I took my own expenses from my family. My brother is a true musical genius. He is studying Music at Fine Arts High School in Antalya. I set up a music studio in his room where he could develop his talent.
Which city do you want to go to the most?
Spain and Mexico. I want to experience their music, street art, and their interest in art. I also want to visit Japan, which is a very different country from this world.
In your opinion, what is the most exaggerated thing in this life?
Money. Yes, it provides opportunities and it opens many doors. But if the importance were given to acculturation instead of money, everyone would do more meaningful things.
