Synopsis
Azem (Yilmaz Erdogan), once a beloved literature teacher, finds his life turned upside down when he’s imprisoned for the murder of his wife. Left behind are his two children (a boy and a girl) who are sent to an orphanage after their father’s arrest. But the truth behind the tragedy is far more complicated than it seems. Although Azem confesses to the crime, he’s not actually the killer. He carries this painful secret in silence, known only to his closest friends.
Years pass. When Azem is finally released from prison, he returns to visit the grave of his wife. Standing there, overwhelmed with emotion, he reads a poem filled with longing and guilt. One line strikes especially deep: “It is not only your love, but also being your perpetrator!”
Hoping to reconnect with his children, Azem heads to the orphanage. But the process is tangled in bureaucracy. Because of privacy laws, he is told he must hire a lawyer to learn even the smallest detail about his children. Azem doesn’t know anything about whether his children were adopted, what they’re doing now, or even where they live.
With nowhere else to go, Azem checks into a small hotel, trying to figure out his next steps. It’s not long before the staff and other guests learn about his past on the internet. Though they look at him with suspicion, Azem simply says that he confessed to the murder and there is something he cannot disclose to anyone.
One day, when Azem enters the hotel, he crosses paths with Zerre (Orkuncan Izan). Zerre’s slang-filled speech quickly irritates Azem, and their encounter turns into a small discussion. As tensions rise, Dilber (Hazar Erguclu) appears and she leaves an interesting first impression on Azem. Azem and Dilber continue to cross paths at the hotel.
Trying to rebuild his life after prison, Azem faces many challenges in reintegrating into society. He faces difficulties in finding work, rebuilding trust, and hiding the truth about his past. To protect his identity, he introduces himself as “Adem” when applying for jobs.
Azem eventually finds work as a private tutor for a wealthy family. His student, Ayca (Ulku Hilal Ciftci), is a rebellious teenager with no interest in school. Ayca’s attitude has forced many tutors to quit. That’s why, her mother Piraye (Selma Ergec) offers Azem a two-day-a-week position, warning him the job won’t be easy. Piraye is a cool and successful businesswoman, and she offers this position without knowing Azem’s past.
Despite the chaos, Dilber begins to develop feelings for Azem. She works as a dancer and singer at a nightclub, and her lifestyle is not similar to that of Azem. While she is beautiful and spirited, Azem isn’t ready for a relationship. He tells her honestly that he needs time to heal.
Dilber’s story also has another struggle. Forced into marriage with a man named Zahir (Mustafa Yildiran) at just 18, she ran away two years later and has been trying to divorce him ever since. To keep him away, Dilber occasionally pays him off, but Zahir always finds her address. Things reach a boiling point when Zahir sees Dilber with Azem. He causes a public scene due to his jealousy. The story becomes more complicated when Piraye, too, begins to show interest in Azem.
Torn between past and present, between guilt and hope, Azem must find a way to build a new life while piecing together the fragments of the one he lost. His journey is anything but easy. His feelings for Dilber are confusing and complicated by her violent ex. He also continues his search for his children.
